So, I guess I’m a farmer now. A year in to the pandemic and I’m finally self-sufficient; growing my own food. Actually, I started on these banana trees like three years ago and this is the first time I’ve gotten them to bear fruit. I’m a proud plant parent.

I don’t necessarily go looking for trouble… but sometimes expeditions turn in to incidents. My friend Cindy doesn’t fully trust me to lead adventures. When I told her about an old, abandoned prison somewhere between Mayflower Bocawina National Park and Pomona village… she wasn’t overly excited.

I went on a grand adventure off the peninsula yesterday with friends. She wanted to collect some of those wild orchids that grow on other trees: Epiphytes! Orchids love orange groves. We found LOADS of them growing on orange trees throughout the Stann Creek district, south-central Belize.

Know your tropical fruit- Sapodilla

Lessons from the veggie stand! I picked IT up and put my pride down and asked the question: “what is this?” Sapodilla– the texture is odd… granular (?) and the taste is SWEET. Sort of like a soft pear but grainier and cloyingly sweet, confectionary sweet- like the sugar cube of fruits!

Cockscomb Basin Forest and Jaguar Reserve- with Kids

Cockscomb Nature Reserve is located in the Stann Creek district of Belize, in the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountain range. About 150 square miles of protected area was established in 1986 as the world’s only Jaguar sanctuary. Extensive trails, river tubing, and a small but informative welcome center all add to the natural beauty that abounds in this robust rain forest reserve.

Shopping in Belize- sorta Sam’s Club

Belize does not have any big box stores. Nor do they have any chains or franchises like McDonalds or Subway. We have some department stores in Belize city and other select locations. Stann Creek has a warehouse-style discount store with bulk items- Sam’s Club (sorta).
