Looking for Lynam Prison- another Megan misadventure

I don’t necessarily go looking for trouble… but sometimes expeditions turn in to incidents. My friend Cindy doesn’t fully trust me to lead adventures. When I told her about an old, abandoned prison somewhere between Mayflower Bocawina National Park and Pomona village… she wasn’t overly excited.

Cockscomb Basin Forest and Jaguar Reserve- with Kids

Cockscomb Nature Reserve is located in the Stann Creek district of Belize, in the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountain range. About 150 square miles of protected area was established in 1986 as the world’s only Jaguar sanctuary. Extensive trails, river tubing, and a small but informative welcome center all add to the natural beauty that abounds in this robust rain forest reserve.

Best hike in Southern Belize- Antelope Falls in Bocawina National Park

About an hour drive from Placencia Village, off the Southern Highway past Hopkins, is Mayflower Bocawina National Park.  Many visitors come to the park on adventure tours for Zip Lining or Waterfall Rappelling (remember I wrote about the rappelling here?) but if you’re looking for a nearly free, self-guided day trip I recommend one of the beautiful hikes here.  Don’t be afraid to get a little hot and dirty.  Pay the park fee ($10 bzd for foreign guests, $2 for local visitors), bring a picnic lunch and extra…

We all carpooled out to the beautiful and lush rainforest of Bocawina National Park for a day of hiking, swimming in natural pools, and the seriously insane waterfall rappelling. They also have a zip line course in the…

Cockscomb Hike with the Ladies of Placencia

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is a huge park about an hour drive from Placencia that has a bunch of hiking trails and waterfalls and even river tubing. If you come to the village on vacation but want to see the jungle and spot some cool wildlife, Cockscomb is probably the closest trip you can choose. I had the pleasure of tagging along with some other moms from the village on a kids-free morning hike. The entrance fee is $2.50 for Belizean nationals and residents and $10 for…
