Hobbs Brewing opens their Brew Barge venue in Placencia

The looooong anticipated opening of Hobbs Brewing Co.’s Brew Barge is finally happening!  Peninsula residents and visitors alike have been anxiously waiting to see what precisely Hobbs would do with that hulking big barge in their marina; renovations have been start-and-stop over the past 14 months (which is no real surprise given the erratic nature of life amid a global pandemic) but are finally complete and they are ready to throw open their doors- or, more accurately, drop their gangplanks to the public. It is my supreme pleasure…

Wonderful Waterfall at Billy Barquedier National Park

Belize boasts loads of beautiful waterfalls.  Some are easy to reach, some are seldom seen because they’re so remote.  Some are quiet and gentle, some roar down their rock face, some change their appearance drastically from season to season.  I like a waterfall that requires a bit of effort to reach (so it feels like you’ve earned it when you get there) and has a natural pool at its base- and it should, of course, be rimmed with lush and pristine forest.  The waterfall at Billy Barquedier Park,…

Healthcare in Belize- Chiropractic Care comes to the Peninsula

Placencia has gained a valuable service with the recent addition of the AmeriCare Caribbean Chiropractic practice located in the Tipsy Strip on the sidewalk.  Dr. Christopher Phillip joins the small pool of health and wellness practitioners on the peninsula and offers a service that has been much anticipated and frequently asked for by both locals and vacationers alike. I met with Dr. Chris and his wife at their Placencia office, which is actually just a satellite practice to their main office located in Spanish Lookout.  They moved their…

Know Your Tropical Fruit: Starfruit

Starfruit, originally native to Southeast Asia, has been gaining popularity worldwide and is now being cultivated in many tropical regions- including Belize.  This uniquely shaped fruit is easy to identify; slice a cross section and you immediately see where the star fruit gets its name. It isn’t something you necessarily see at every produce stand, every day… more of an occasional treat.  You might find small bags of star fruit being peddled at speed bumps or by wandering vendors walking the villages.  Star fruit is a pale green…

Unique food tour to the Spice Farm in Southern Belize

Another food tour post!  Belize is killing it when it comes to agritourism and I must admit, I’m IN to it!  It’s fun, it’s flavorful, it’s educational…what could be better?  In Southern Belize we have a bounty of bananas, a surplus of citrus, a plethora of papaya, a copious amount of cacao, and too many mangoes.  The climate is conducive to year-round growing and the soil is rich; which was the inspiration for the creation of the Belize Spice Farm and Botanical Garden– a beautifully special property you…

What’s happening on the Tipsy Strip this weekend

The Tipsy Strip is a hub of shops and restaurants on the sidewalk near… you guessed it: Tipsy Tuna.  I’ve been watching some changes to the Strip in the past weeks and some exciting things are happening in that little section. If it’s been awhile since you walked the sidewalk here then you might be surprised to see a few new additions to this segment of walkway.  There are two new tour operator’s offices: Capt. Dermin Shrivers Fishing Charters and DTOURZ/ Doyle’s Smoke Yaad retail shop.  Dermin is…

Di Bruwry- di biggest pub in Belize

“Daaammmmnnnn,” was what I thought when we pulled up to Bowen and Bowen’s new flagship pub, Di Bruwry.  This place is MASSIVE, and MODERN, and what the heck are we in North America right now?!  Bowen & Bowen, you have me shook.  It’s been quite awhile since we’ve ventured out of the village and up to the city so I was completely unprepared for this expansive and exquisite new facility near the International Airport in Ladyville, Belize. Di Bruwry is Belize Brewing Company’s (a subdivision of the larger…

Paintball/ Shrimp Farm/ Waterslide- weirdly wonderful weekend near Belize City

Belize has so many oddities.  Fantastic oddities like some land out in Ladyville (Belize City adjacent; where the International Airport is located) that is home to a working shrimp farm and restaurant…and a public pool with a little lighthouse tower that is a waterslide…and a paintball place that is unsettlingly close to a live ammunition firing range!  It’s oddities like Captain Hook’s Shrimp Farm and Restaurant/ Lighthouse Bay Pool/ Adventure Zone Paintball that made our weekend wonderful. Some of our Placencia peeps planned an overnight trip to Belize…
