The quaint and quirky village of Placencia is sometimes called “the caye that you can drive to.” At the tip of a narrow, 16-mile long peninsula, Placencia is surrounded by water and feels like an island even though it connects to the mainland. Beach bars and aquatic adventures define the village as a tourism destination and we have our share of options to choose from for nautical excursions. Here are my top choices of unique boats to board for fun or relaxation from Placencia.
The Big Sipper
A double-decker party pontoon. You’ll probably hear the Big Sipper long before you catch sight of it’s silhouette sliding along the horizon. Complete with bar, bathroom, DJ and dancefloor- The Big Sipper is the peninsula’s premier pick for good-time-charters. They sell individual tickets for sunset cruises and such but how fun would this be for private events?! Rent the whole boat for your family and friends for a birthday bash or wedding party/ rehearsal dinner. They accommodate up to 40 people.
Vintage 1951 Chris Craft
Cruise in ultimate style in this incredible antique watercraft. This boat can be booked for just 2 people so it would be a wonderfully romantic excursion for a couple. The Chris Craft is a real head-turner. A rare treat when this boat passes by the municipal pier, everyone stops what they’re doing to stare or take photos of this darling vintage boat. You couldn’t help but feel like a celebrity in this thing!
Custom Cruiser- Belizean Hardwood Pontoon
This stunning, hand-built pontoon is perfect for sunset cruising around the lagoon. Comfortable and spacious, it has a capacity for an intimate gathering of up to 10 guests. Built locally by guides, Eric Reco Foreman and David Muschamp, the beautiful Belizean Style features an astounding array of hardwoods. The floor is Salm wood, the steering wheel is Rose wood, the hatch is Mahogany, the captain’s seat is Purple Heart, the tables are Cedar and the panels are Guanacaste. Book this incredible custom boat for a romantic cocktail hour or a relaxing sunset tour with friends and family. https://www.sandycovebztours.com/placencia-cruise/
Captain Jak’s Family Fun Pontoon
Another two-story pontoon boat. This one is much smaller than the Big Sipper listed above; with a maximum capacity for 16 riders, this boat is a great choice for smaller private parties. They offer it for sunset cruises but I think this would be SO fun to rent for a couple hours in the afternoon for a kids birthday party or family gathering. Fun features: the super cozy couch-like lounge deck on the top is perfect for sun bathing or star gazing, there’s the most adorable secret toilet, and the SLIDE! I love this boat, contact Captain Jaks directly about booking because their packages for it aren’t listed on the website yet.
This catamaran itself isn’t all that unique, it’s the wonderful crew that makes this charter a top-notch experience. Captains Jimmy and Mike are so accommodating and attentive, you will feel pampered beyond compare. Book this boat with a bunch of friends and sail to a neighboring caye for the day. Laughing Bird or Moho would make for a magical day of swimming, snorkeling, BBQing, and sunbathing.
