This week, the Placencia municipal pier got a lot of love and attention. A community clean-up had been organized to clear garbage from on, around and under the pier- something that has never been done before. If you’ve walked along our beaches you’ve undoubtedly seen Mr. Goby or his assortment of friends; large, decorative receptacles for people to deposit glass and plastics. Mr. Goby receptacles aim to reduce beach and sea pollution on the peninsula by providing appropriate places to leave litter as well as lead regular beach clean-ups and educate young people on the fragile ecosystem surrounding Placencia and how they can hope to protect it.
On a beautifully sunny and calm Thursday morning, teams of people came to volunteer their talents and clean up garbage by land, snorkel, and scuba. Seahorse, Splash and Captain Jaks dive shops all pitched in equipment for the divers. Village Council had arranged the public works guys to come collect the trash bags as they were filled, and Port Authority discouraged boats from using the pier for the 3 hours it took to haul out the assortment of utensils, bottles, lost clothing items, boat parts, and all manner of litter.
What a wonderful thing to see! So many people turned out to help; it’s stuff like this that really makes me love this community. Tremendous job everyone!
You can pitch in on future clean-ups, follow Mr. Goby & Friends on Facebook and keep an eye out for their schedule of frequent events.
