So I suppose this is Belize’s alternative to Girl Scout Cookies…apples for kids! I kept seeing an add pop up on my Facebook feed for this end-of-the-year fundraiser. Apples for Kids Belize is a fundraiser for the Belize Camping Experience, a charity that provides enrichment experiences to youth from Belize City. Their apple sale is a nationwide effort and boxes of apples could be preordered then delivered to your hometown via Caribbean Chicken Trucks. I got my box today and what a treat!
Apples are a quasi-luxury item here simply because they aren’t a tropical fruit and must be imported from elsewhere. Our veggie stand always has them but at $2-3 bzd a piece for nice Red Delicious, they aren’t something I get LOADS of all the time (bananas, on the other hand, are 7 for a dollar and I get utterly tired of those). When I saw this promotion for an entire crate of apples for $110bzd AND the proceeds went to charity, well! Who could say no to that?!
I don’t know anything about the Belize Camping Experience’s ministry but I certainly like the idea of taking underprivileged or at-risk kids from the inner city and letting them experience the beautiful nature of their country. Maybe it is the first and only time they’ve ever been camping or left the city. Their facebook page says that the apples will be an annual drive so keep a watch for it next year if you didn’t snag a box this time. They are really good!
