Driftwood Days- beachcombing in Placencia

Whooooo boy! The beach has provided some treasures for me. I love a good beachcombing session. What wonders will you find? An interesting shell, a beautiful piece of polished sea glass, a battered and barnacle encrusted buoy? PRIZES! I (owner of a guesthouse named Driftwood Gardens) feel like I’ve won the ocean lottery this weekend with the riches that have washed ashore for me to find. I added two interesting pieces of driftwood to my garden collection and I’m downright delighted with myself. My husband doesn’t share the…

Mango Madness

May is for mangoes in Belize. The country has over 20 varietals of mango trees. Twenty types of mangoes! They grow wild along the roadsides and have been expertly grafted and planted in yard- mangoes are everywhere, and they’re fruiting like mad at the moment.

Bragging about my Bananas

So, I guess I’m a farmer now. A year in to the pandemic and I’m finally self-sufficient; growing my own food. Actually, I started on these banana trees like three years ago and this is the first time I’ve gotten them to bear fruit. I’m a proud plant parent.

Why your next vacation should be at an “Air B&B”-type property instead of a Hotel or Resort

Belize doesn’t have much in the way of chains or big brand hotels and this has opened the door to small, independent hoteliers and subsequently: a charm that is distinctly Belizean.

Life in the slow lane

A down right sedate September is coming to a close. This month typically would have been filled with celebrations and parades and dancing in the streets

Build a business in Belize

Belize is booming! Both as a vacation destination and as a haven for retirees seeking to spend their golden years in a warm climate with a relatively low cost of living. But not everyone who wishes to move here can afford a perpetual vacation; not all of us are retirement-ready, what then? How easy is it to make a living here? The answer might surprise you! It’s not all that difficult to build a business in Belize.

Making moves and film debuts

In my assessment it’s been a whirlwind of a week! Of course, you may not agree with my assessment because I’m used to a much slower pace than most other people but it seemed like we were going going going the past few days. I’m probably in need of a few lazy beach days and margaritas to recover- note to self to pencil that in to my calendar. And the beach has been gorgeous! Look how calm clean clear! So, what have I been busy with you ask?…

Settling in to our new lives-BEElize it

So, we’ve been settling in to life here in Placencia village; and in to our home/ guesthouse. Which we renamed Driftwood Gardens by the way. General upkeep of a home here is enough to keep one busy most days but we’ve also done some significant and minor upgrades to take this traditional Belizean style house to the next level of comfort.  We replaced the old wooden louver windows with glass ones (DM me if you want to hear our Peter’s Glass horror story and scathing review; I won’t…

Hello strangers

Oh my word it’s been a long time since I’ve posted!  I plan on rectifying that- on reviving this little blog.  So what has been happening since our move?  Plenty! We proudly celebrated our first September Celebrations in Belize- it’s almost as if you can’t throw a stone in  Belize during this month without hitting a party or parade.  The big days being the 10th– St George’s Caye Day.  And the 21st– Belize Independence Day. We also celebrated our first Halloween And our first “big fat American” Thanksgiving…

Our New Belizean House…and you can stay with us!!

So on June 28th we actually moved into our new house, Bamboo Gardens. It was exactly 4 weeks to the day from when we first saw the house. Pretty quick for sure. On that morning the utilities were switched into our names. This was done much differently than in the states. Phil and the seller Bob just walked 5 minutes north to the Electric and Water Companies. The companies share the same building and employees. Phil just showed his passport to open an account and then transferred each…
