Day 3 of my friends’ week-long visit- we had to get out on the sea! Moho Caye is my favorite island to visit for a day trip from Placencia. The snorkeling isn’t the best Belize has to offer but the real drawl for Moho is the undeveloped beauty of the island. The white sand, the crystalline warm water, the burgeoning palm trees heavy with coconuts. Moho doesn’t have a resort or swim-up bar on it… but that’s the appeal! Moho is all about life’s simple pleasures (freshly caught fish cooking on a BBQ, a hammock gently swaying in the shade) in a stunningly beautiful, natural setting.
The caye has one caretaker’s house and they do a bang-up job making the island a top notch destination for day trips. You have everything you could want: picnic tables, hammocks, grills, toilets, and even games like horseshoes and giant jenga. The caretakers rake the beach nightly so sandflies won’t ruin your visit by biting up your ankles. A Moho Caye day is just laidback perfection. Pack a picnic lunch, bring a cooler or ingredients to make some rum punch, bring a book or your snorkel gear or a float and make your own fun. We chose to do some beachcombing and some floating between snacking and consuming a few adult beverages.
To get to Moho Caye you’ll need to arrange transportation with a local captain. We used Eworth Garbutt and he was great. He and his guys are responsive, responsible, and know their way around the local cayes. Several size boats the pick from so put together a group of families and friends, big or small, and Eworth will be happy to set up your charter. We chose a barebones charter of just transportation to and from one caye but you could make your own perfect boat day of island hopping, fishing, snorkeling, whatever! I’m one hundred percent going to use him again when my mom visits; and I can’t wait for her to enjoy this unspoiled little swath of beach that I find to be bliss!
**Moho Caye is a private island but is run sort of like a National Park. The caretakers on the caye will act as park rangers and collect a fee from visitor- $20bz for foreign guests and $5bz for Belizean and PRs
