Madisco and The Little Wine Bar hosted a tasting event at Singing Sands Resort to introduce a new line of wines now available in Belize. La Playa wines from Chile are now being imported to Belize by Madisco, the country’s most well-known distributer of premium brand food, liquor, and hospitality products. Madisco is the exclusive distributor for all the Kimberly Clark Professional products, LASCO, SYSCO, JF Mills, Global foods and more. They supply wholesalers, hotels, bars and restaurants, and grocery stores. Simply put, Madisco brings Belize all the lovely things we don’t make here… like WINE! I’m very excited about this particular line of wine that is now being offered here because it is not only delightful and affordable (around $35bz a bottle) but the winery is ‘certified sustainable.’
La Playa Wines’ Sustainability
I had to ask Jana, of The Little Wine Bar, what it means for a wine to be sustainable. Is that just another clever marketing buzzword that people get excited about? (if so then I admit, they got me) Jana assured me it IS a real thing and aside from growing grapes naturally without fertilizers and pesticides, La Playa has gone some steps further to farm consciously and use cover-crops, composting and water-saving irrigation techniques. They use no chemicals, employ only natural yeast during fermentation (no commercially produced or genetically modified organisms), and give 1% of their sales to For The Planet. How neat is that?!

La Playa Wines’ Varietals
We tried six of La Playa’s wines and 2 others for comparison- La Playa’s varietals won out over the competition in my opinion. I liked their fresh and citrusy Sauvignon Blanc and their smooth dark Reserva Cab Sauv but my absolute favorite was the Chardonnay. I’m a Chardonnay girl but chardonnays can really swing to extremes. I more appreciate a buttery chard than one that’s too bright and this chardonnay hit the mark being refreshing but not too acidic, substantial but not heavy (as some very oaky chardonnays can be). This is my new go-to wine you guys! Jana, if you’re reading this, keep a La Playa Chardonnay cool for me at The Little Wine Bar from now on.

Where to wine
The Little Wine Bar in Placencia carries the full line of La Playa wine offerings as well as their Reservas. Look for La Playa wines at other select retailers and restaurants around the country or contact Madisco directly to purchase, they fulfill orders to individuals as well.
