The weather has been crazy hazy HOT lately. This is the time of year we battle brush fires (either intentionally set or naturally occurring) and the smoke combined with the Sahara Dust plume we’ve been sieged with has darkened our sky for days. The humidity is borderline oppressive but there’s also excitement in the air. This is the time of year, after the high of the tourism season, that we get back in to making plans and moves for us- the community. Lobsterfest planning is in full swing (if you haven’t already- save the dates for July 14, 15, 16!), Village Council is working with the Lands Department to secure public spaces (like the Point), and Rotary has something big in the works for the basketball court (they’re playing it close to the vest at the moment until things solidify a bit more but I can tell you its going to be niiiiice). The Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department also has some plans in place so let me give you an update on what we’re working on now.
Floatchella 2023
SAVE THE DATE and get yourself a floatie for Sunday, August 20, 2023. Floatchella, the premier fundraising event for PVFD, is basically a floating bar crawl around the tip of the peninsula. SOO much fun and for a good cause. Read about past Floatchellas here.
New Station
We’re getting a new station… eventually. Okay so the land up by the airstrip, next to Tropic where the taxis park is and has been for awhile the future sight of where we want a proper Fire Station. Years ago the PVFD was working on making it happen and with the help of Rotary they secured the land and a wooden cabana to begin the project. The idea was to fix up the cabana, put a shipping container for equipment storage next to it then a roof in between to act as a bay for the truck but we just couldn’t ever get all the funds together to make it a reality. They did work here and there as money would allow but its still a long ways off from being the station it should be. But the National Fire Service, who has been building proper concrete stations for municipalities across the country, has finally told us its Placencia’s turn! NFS is going to use the space to build a proper station- right next to the new Polyclinic (that is taking an ETERNITY to build but that’s another story!).

We’re so excited to hear this and it means that instead of slowly fixing up our cabana, we can sell it and focus our energies on something else the Fire Department needs. Our new long term goal will be to procure a new 4×4 or Mule or whatever they’re called. We’ve got 2 serviceable trucks now, the promise of a proper station, but what we could really use is a small vehicle to maneuver the sand and tight pathways in the village.

These things are pricey but with Floatchellas and calendars and the sale of our cabana I think we can afford one in less than 5 years.
Old Cabin for Sale!
This is our incomplete cabin which we’re hoping to get $15,000bz for. It is walled and wired to be a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom plus an office (or tiny second bedroom). You haul it, you have it!
