Souvenir shopping in Placencia? Don’t take home another tacky tee shirt or crappy key chain. Your mother-in-law is never going to wear that hideous beaded bracelet. No one wants a magnet from your vacation on their fridge. Do yourself and everyone back home a favor and gift them flavor… shop at Taste Belize!
My favorite little shop, on the main road in the village across from Sidewinders, is loaded with goodies you just have to get. I’ve never seen the shelves so full; so many intriguing products from seaweed to soap to spices, and EVERYTHING they sell is 100% Belizean made (and organically grown locally). I’ve always thought that consumables make the best gifts and stand by it. What would you rather receive: some dumb tchotchke to sit around collecting dust or a nice bottle of salad vinegar you can actually use and enjoy?
But Taste Belize isn’t just for tourists, nay nay! It is a must browse for locals too. Part health food store, part bush medicine pharmacy, fully fantastic. Teas and tinctures, skin and hair products, superfoods galore, vegan yogurt from coconut milk, and my absolute favorite- the fudge! The freshly made, dark chocolate fudge is soooo good- like, slap your momma good. I got some for my mom when she was visiting this week, and it took ALL my self-restraint not to cold cock her in the face and take it back for myself!
Christmas is just around the corner. Your child’s teacher might like so soothing cacao teas to drink from the dozens of ‘World’s Best Teacher’ mugs she already has. Your neighbor might prefer Lyra’s fudge to your homemade cookies. What makes a better hostess gift than a bottle of wine? A bottle of interesting local fruit wine.
Stop in to Taste Belize and take a look around; you won’t be disappointed!
