What to do this weekend in Placencia

The weather is warm, the restrictions are loosening, tourism is picking back up, and the general attitude around town is expectant and lighthearted. The CDC has dropped their travel alert for Belize to a level 2, making it one of the safest destinations to visit right now. Loads of local residents have received their first round of vaccine at very efficiently ran public pop-up-community-clinic events and though enhanced sanitizing and social distancing protocols are still in place, things are feeling darn near normal. So, with that said, let’s…

Weekly recap: art auction fundraiser at Muna and a dead manatee washed ashore

We’ve had a busy week.  “Busy” being a relative term when you live a laid-back lifestyle.  We’ve just returned from a trip up to Cayo but before I tell you about that, I’ll recap some village happens from Placencia this past week. Art Auction Fundraiser at Muna On Saturday night we attended a fundraiser for Greta Leslie, owner of Art n Soul Gallery on the sidewalk here in Placencia.  Loads of beautiful pieces from different Belizean artists were on auction at Muna Rooftop Restaurant & Bar.  You could…

Fun, sun, and rum- on the Caribbean Sea

Floatchella, a fundraiser for the peninsula volunteer fire department, was huge fun and a massive success. The event is, in essence, a floating bar crawl through the crystal-clear Caribbean Sea around picturesque Placencia. It’s basically a perfect day.

Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department- putting the FUN in fundraising

The PVFD and Barefoot Beach bar hosted a fun and unique fundraiser this past Sunday- a village wide scavenger hunt.  Participants donated $30 per person and formed teams to compete for a $500 cash grand prize (donated by local businesses and individuals).   It’s no secret that our Fire Department is woefully underfunded by the National Fire Service; national resources must be shared and are limited and I’m sure we’re not the only community that feels we could do with an injection of capital to maintain and upgrade…

5 Mile Run at the Crack of Dawn

Included in the MANY events and festivities for Lobsterfest Weekend in Placencia is the Edlin Leslie Sr. Battle Cancer 5 mile run/walk. The event benefits the BlissfulSage Foundation whose mission is to provide quality, dignified care for terminally ill patients in Southern Belize. The event unofficially kicks off the weekend of partying and indulging (although really the runners/walkers didn’t seem to be the crazy partier types). And for a personal confession- I for one feel entitled to indulge in copious amounts of lobster and rum now that I’ve…
