Ya’axkin Butterfly Farm at Maya Center, Belize

About halfway between Dangriga and Placencia, along the Southern Highway, there is a community named Maya Center.  This village is situated at the entrance to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Reserve and Jaguar Sanctuary.  Clean and quaint and steeped in tradition, this living cultural center is a day-destination in its own right.  Shop arts and handmade crafts at the Women’s collective, speak with traditional healers and tour their medicinal gardens, learn how to process cacao the time-honored way on a chocolate tour, and sample classic Belizean and Mayan dishes….

Turtle Inn Resort with Kids

Turtle Inn, a Coppola Family Hideaway Resort (yes Coppola, as in Francis Ford Coppola, the famous film director/ wine maker/ a bunch of other things), in Placencia is eco-luxury high-end rustic dreamy indulgence.  I envision well dressed, gym-toned, expensive smelling people lounging around in big sunglasses drinking vintage wines when I envision a vacation at Turtle Inn.  But did you know they also cater to families (not just pseudo celebs and venture capitalists)?!?  Our little guy, Mitch, and his friends had the distinct pleasure of attending a Turtle…

Beautiful Blue Creek Cave

On our Mothers and Sons winter break adventure down south, Julia and I took the boys to Blue Creek Cave.  Our guide, Marlon, from the Butterfly Eco Park showed us how to find this beautiful wet cave that a proper full tour of would take HOURS. Julia is scared of jungles and probably terrified of caves; Mitch has the stamina of a sloth and I wouldn’t want to carry him through wet caverns and over slippery stones for hours.  So we didn’t tour inside the cave but we…
