The Chicken Drop makes a triumphant return to Placencia! The much loved tradition of small-stakes gambling on where a poop will land is just SO Placencia and we’ve not had anyone organize one in years. Buba Wuba’s on Harbor Place North has just added the Chicken Drop to their weekly line-up of entertainment and we couldn’t be happier. Who wouldn’t want to see this sh!t?!?
The Chicken Drop isn’t new to Placencia; I think it is a beloved, albeit unorthodox, custom throughout the Caribbean. Barefoot Bar used to host a Chicken Drop years ago when they were on the back road instead of their current location on the beach and before that, the now defunct, Kitty’s Place had one at their Sand Bar (located where Los Porticos now occupies). San Pedro hosts a long-running “World-Famous Chicken Drop” weekly that is a hit with tourists and has become an island institution, but Placencia hasn’t been home to a similar event with any regularity in a long time. But that has changed!

Buba Wuba proprietor, Bobby Coppock is a top notch organizer of fringe festivities, eccentric events, and unconventional occurrences. Bobby is at the helm of the Christmas Boat Parade, and as an unofficial leprechaun, he always leads a rousing St Patty’s Day Parade, and in general, he’s consistently keen to partner with local organizations to put on unique fundraisers (Buba Wuba’s has traditionally been our starting point for Floatchella for example). Of course Bobby would bring in Chicken Sh!t Bingo!
It’s simple: buy a number for $2bz that corresponds with a tile on the board, if the chicken poops on your number tile you win the pot (the pot is a 50/50 split for a local charity that Bobby will choose each week, this whole month proceeds will go to the Fire Department…whoop whoop!)

There is a bit of fun fanfare when “prepping” the chicken to enter the arena… I don’t know why, but for some reason its essential to blow on the Chicken’s butt. Then it gets tossed on to the tiled board and hopefully walks around a bit before pooping. Everyone cheers, especially the lucky person who’s tile the turd lands on. But it’s not all easy celebrations, there is one unpleasant stipulation to collecting your winnings. The winner must clean up the poo before they can take their prize! (pssh, not a problem for this lady- she’s a mom… she’s cleaned up a lot of poop in her life, this ain’t nothin)
