Oh my gosh, you guys! I’ve written about Itz’ana Resort and Residences here before (how they raised the bar in hospitality on the peninsula, put on fun family-oriented events like pizza by the pool or gingerbread house decorating, and they’ve got the coolest ::secret:: bar) but this week they’re holding a health & wellness retreat and guess who is attending it… lucky ME!!!! Here’s the 411 on the retreat, what I’ve seen so far, and how you can get in on any of the rest of the events.
Nourishing & Healing 5-day Retreat
Itz’ana has put together a fun, informative, and holistic line-up of activities to participate in during the retreat. Hosted by Kassia Fiedor, a popular nutritionist/herbalist/wellness chef, the retreat is built around nourishing the body and soul. She curates menus for retreats and events and offers cooking classes for clients looking to hone their healthy eating practices. Her recipes are plant-based, gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free. (You can imagine I was pretty skeptical. I’m thinking, another skinny b!tch is going to spend a few days telling us not to eat bread so all our problems will disappear… along with every ounce of joy I derive from mealtime. Greaaaaat. But it really is good! No lie!) Follow her on Instagram if you want to geek out over photos of incredibly beautiful plates and nutritious ingredients. Not only is Kassia an expert on holistic nutrition in general, she has 5 years experience living and working in Central America with the native fruits, vegetables, and herbs so she’s a perfect choice to lead this retreat in Belize. Read more about Kassia and her new (stunning!) cook book here.
You can’t have a wellness retreat without copious amounts of yoga. Placencia’s own yoga darling, Brice Dial of Positive Vibrations (and Barefoot Bar and Placencia Village Council- she’s all over the show!), is leading twice daily practices and each class is different. I don’t know a salutation from a chakra so I’m just going in to each session ignorant, but there’s Pranic and Nidra and Flow so check the schedule here if you want to jump in on a class.
Last but not least, the top agrotourism guide in Belize, Lyra Spang is the retreat’s resident culinary connoisseur. I’m so excited for her lagoon tour and conservation talk tomorrow. If you haven’t taken a tour with Lyra, aka the Encyclopedia Belizannica, you’re missing out! A bottomless fountain of knowledge and unbridled enthusiasm for her home country’s food and culture, Lyra’s passion is contagious. Read more about Lyra’s partnership with Itz’ana here.
So far SOOOOO GOOD!
Last night me and some girlfriends attended the meet & greet and Conversational Panel with Kassia and Lyra in the ridiculously luxurious 3-bedroom, beach-front penthouse. What a treat! Kassia had curated a delectable spread of nibbles- both beautiful and delicious. I’m utterly perplexed by these carrot and sweet potato patties because they were so perfectly formed and they didn’t fall apart or anything and I just can’t understand how she formed them without egg and breadcrumbs. Seriously, I’ve been thinking about it all day; what sort of sorcery is this?!!? I hope I find out on Sunday during the cooking class.
The discussion on eating locally for health and sustainability was held in the living room and felt fun and informal- like being at a cool cocktail party (at your really wealthy friend’s house) with interesting attendees that you just want to keep listening to. The theme of “Decolonizing your Diet” was really fascinating and thought-provoking.
I’ve also attended 2 sessions of yoga with Brice today and didn’t die. I’ve never been a fan of yoga but every couple years or so I give it another try to see if I’ve changed my mind. Just like our taste buds change and mature, I figure our preferences in things like working out might change too so I keep trying. I won’t say I loved the yoga today but I did like the nap portion a lot and I learned that is called savasana.
How you can join the holistic fun
Check out the schedule of events- you can join a single activity or get a day pass and enjoy the meals, activities, and hang out at the pool.
I’m off to the “Bar Takeover” now to make some herbally mocktails and such, cheers!
