The weather is warm, the restrictions are loosening, tourism is picking back up, and the general attitude around town is expectant and lighthearted. The CDC has dropped their travel alert for Belize to a level 2, making it one of the safest destinations to visit right now. Loads of local residents have received their first round of vaccine at very efficiently ran public pop-up-community-clinic events and though enhanced sanitizing and social distancing protocols are still in place, things are feeling darn near normal. So, with that said, let’s make some plans for the weekend. Here’s what’s happening in Placencia
Beach Cleanup
Friday morning join in on an altruistic hour of oceanic conservation that anyone, everyone, can participate in. The tides have brought in a bit of sargassum (sea grass) recently, and with it: trash. Plastics litter the beach and sea and harm the local marine environs. Do your part to be the solution and help with the beach clean up on Friday. Whether you snorkel, kayak in to the mangroves, or simply stroll the beach–fill a bag and feel good.
Karaoke at Tipsy Tuna
It’s no secret that you can almost always find me at Tipsy Tuna on a Friday night. It’s unofficially become family night among our circle of friends; an end-of-the-week treat for the adults (happy hour!) and a fun evening of running around like feral animals on the beach for the kids (if you see a pack of pre-schoolers running at you, move out of the way). With the recent extension of curfew on weekends, Tipsy has decided to move their popular karaoke night from Thursday to Friday so that the entertainment can be extended to a later hour.

Jap’s BBQ fundraiser
Mr. Lowell Godfrey, affectionately known as “Japs,” is a local fixture. A Placencia patriarch, Japs is an original village boy with deep roots in this community. Come out to the pier on Saturday and support the fundraiser being held for him and enjoy some great grilled meat by the sea. If you only make it to one event this weekend I hope it’s this one.

Toucan Jak’s 2 year anniversary
Toucan Jak’s Tiki Bar at Ocean Breeze Hotel is one of Placencia’s smallest and lesser-known beach bars but it’s created a reputation for itself over the past two years as being a fun and friendly little spot to enjoy a sea breeze and a cold Belikin. Join them for a drink on Saturday and congratulate them on their anniversary. Free jell-o shots and raffles throughout the night

Sunday Brunch at Buba Wuba
Buba Wuba has been offering their Sunday Brunch for awhile now but I just haven’t gotten myself there for one yet. Hopefully this weekend will be the weekend! Dockside dining, eggs bennie, and an Irish coffee?! Sounds like a winning combination.
Pizza by the Pool at Itz’ana
I’ve written about it (here) before but I just love Itz’ana’s new poolside pizza days. It’s such a lovely escape from the mundane to treat yourself to a resort day: fancy lounge chairs, attentive staff, sumptuous surroundings. Take a mini, half-day vacation and indulge in brick oven pizza and a swim in their giant infinity pool.
